How to split a receipt by item
Assign each item to the people who shared it. To split tax and tip proportionally, use each person’s share of the item subtotal. The example below shows the math.
Scan a receipt to split a bill
- On a phone, tap +, then Scan receipt. On a desktop, use Create → Scan receipt. Take or choose a clear photo.
- Check the scanned prices, quantities and total against the receipt. Remove lines you aren’t sharing and fix any scan errors before continuing.
- Choose the group and the people who shared the bill. Review the draft: a scan can start with an equal split. To assign specific items, use an itemized split and review each person’s amount before saving.
On eligible hosted accounts in Canada and the US, SplitBuds can use Google Gemini to read receipt items. Scan availability depends on your setup. Check the detected prices against the receipt, or enter the expense and its items manually.
How to split tax and tip proportionally
Divide each person’s item subtotal by the whole item subtotal. Multiply that fraction by the tax and by the tip you agreed to leave. Add the results to their item subtotal. Use the tip amount from the bill if it is already set.
Alex orders a $18 meal, Maya orders a $12 meal, and they split a $10 appetizer. The subtotal is CAD $40.00. With 10% tax and a 15% pre-tax tip, the total is CAD $50.00.
| Charge | Alex | Maya |
|---|---|---|
| Items | $23.00 | $17.00 |
| Tax | $2.30 | $1.70 |
| Tip | $3.45 | $2.55 |
| Total | $28.75 | $21.25 |
Alex’s $23.00 of the $40.00 subtotal is 57.5%, so Alex pays 57.5% of the tax and tip. If Alex paid the full $50.00, Maya owes Alex $21.25. Check that the shares add up to the amount paid before saving.
When to use an equal split
If everyone agrees to share the whole bill evenly, use the CAD bill split calculator. See SplitBuds receipt review screenshots to preview the scan and review flow. If you already know the amounts, you can also split the bill from an AI chat.
